Series Review: Potemayo

Honi! Honi honi? Honi.. honi honi! Su-na-o!
If anyone can find me a more hilarious show from this season, I’ll be very, very surprised.

“Sunao Moriyama finds a strange but cute creature in his refrigerator that he names Potemayo. Potemayo starts following him everywhere, usually riding on top of his head. His discovery becomes the center of attention in his class at school. Soon after, a similar creature appears, and is named Guchuko by one of Sunao’s classmates. However, Guchuko doesn’t seem to be as good-natured as Potemayo.”
( ANN)

like many others, I originally thought this was a kiddy show (based purely on the art style), but evidently I was wrong! This show features great–albeit crude–adult humor, and I think the art style just helps make it even funnier.

My favourite characters were for sure Nene and Mudo (is that even the correct spelling? I’ve seen quite a few variations). Nene for her blunt and abrasive behaviour towards, well, everyone, Mudo for his incredibly creepy (but hilarious) obsession with Potemayo. Specifically touching it. They prove to be even more hilarious when Mudo accidentally gives Nene a Valentine’s Day present he meant to give to Potemayo, and Nene makes him her slave in exchange for not telling the school about his Potemayo love (despite the fact that it’s pretty obvious). Such acts of slavery include: carrying a large backpack filled with rocks (with Nene on top of said pack), playing butler at her pool party, and helping to make her 3 older brothers, who love doting on her–extremely jealous.

Mikan obsession with Moriyama is also a great gag, especially all the times she ends up hurting herself because she’s too busy daydreaming about it. Throughout the series, she probably lost a good 10 litre of blood.

Guchuko proves to be just as hilarious as Potemayo herself, being super destructive.. but ducttaping everything she destroys, such as a refrigerator, Moriyama’s front door, and Kyou’s chocolate (salty) balls. Of course, if you scare her too much, she’ll just laz0r you to a crisp with her.. head ornaments? Honestly, I have no idea what they are.. except hilarious, of course. The gifts she leaves to Kyou, as gross as they may be, are awesome. I sure would love it if someone repaid me with dead animals!

This is my favourite kind of comedy: stupid, crude jokes. Potemayo was a great surprise for this season, and for sure the most hilarious. Definite recommendation to everyone as a must-watch!

PS: I still suspect Potemayo and Guchuko were created via some really rancid, old leftovers.

Well, I also watched this anime thinking it would be something my 2 year old daughter would like… my bad, totally. There’s something about Potemayo that definetely is not right (politically), but is like you have to watch it because they look cute!… how strange did that sound? I mean, we have a gay boy, a boy in love with his sister, an unknow guy giving away candies on the street, a father leaving his son alone for extended periods of time… I mean, what the hell? But still, it is funny, I must admit. And you end up being empathic with Sunao (when he remembers his mother). I personally liked Guchuko, I would love to have a plush doll of her (secretly), but definetely, would not let a 5 year old (at least) watch this anime…
